CNA Certification and Job Opportunities

In today’s fast growing healthcare field, Certified Nursing Assistants are very much in demand. This is a rewarding career that not only involves nursing skills, but also requires hands on direct care. The CNA is involved in the daily care of the patient more than any other person in the medical professions. They are responsible for such things as monitoring vital signs and administering medications, as well as assisting with their patients basic needs. Bathing, grooming, feeding and making beds are also among their duties. While this field can be demanding, it is among the most gratifying of careers. Employment opportunities abound in hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living centers. Many positions are available in the home health field as well.

Prospective CNA's must enroll in a state approved certification program. These are offered by colleges, medical facilities and the American Red Cross and are a minimum of 75 hours. The length of the program varies and is usually taught by a registered nurse. A competency test will be administered at the end of the session. Both written and clinical skills will be tested. The written part tests basic knowledge while the clinical area involves providing hands on care while being observed by a registered nurse. Upon passing the test, the CNA is listed on a registry of state certified nursing assistants. Each state has its own separate list.

As reported by payscale.com, CNA's earn anywhere from $10.42 to $12.56 an hour depending on the area of the country and the employer.
